Bullish sentiment remains the dominant theme across the global merchant ammonia market against a backdrop of planned and unplanned plant outages that have taken a large bite out of export volumes in key regions.
Industry majors Yara and Mosaic just settled the Tampa contract for October loadings at $590pt cfr, up $50pt from this month’s figure of $540pt cfr, with the agreement widely expected given recent spot business in North Africa and Northwest Europe at higher levels to last done.
In addition, the settlement of the US benchmark at its highest level since late 2023, comes as Mosaic prepares to take delivery of several offshore spot cargoes for its Florida terminal due to a turnaround at its 450,000t per year plant at Faustina, Louisiana.
The phosphates producer does not comment on its raw materials procurement, but two tankers with a combined carrying capacity of 52,000t are currently heading to Tampa from the Caribbean.
Firmer spot prices were also achieved by Algeria’s leading exporter, Sorfert, last week when a string of deals was done with traders for delivery to Europe, a development that immediately pushed up supplier price targets in the latter region.
That series of sales, which comes amid capacity constraints in the Caribbean, was headlined by a deal at $580pt fob for 30,000t split across two liftings for late October and early November.
Prior to that deal, Sorfert sold a 15,000t cargo to Trammo at $565pt fob for October loading and an identical-sized cargo to an unidentified party at $570pt fob.
Saudi supply squeeze now being widely felt
Upward price pressure has also been very visible in the East, where the unplanned shutdown of a Saudi plant will remove at least 300,000t of merchant material from the market between late August and the end of the year.
This was underlined by Trammo’s purchase of a 10-15,000t November cargo from Sabic Agri-Nutrients at $420pt fob, with that figure up around 25% on recent term netbacks to the Kingdom’s suppliers.
While Indian consumers of ammonia are well served by discounted material from Iran, next business for tonnes of non-sanctioned origin are expected to average around $450pt cfr, depending on the disport.
Further east, with turnaround season at many chemicals producers about to commence, the loss of the 100,000t per month of Saudi product will be offset to some extent, while export availability from Indonesia is returning to normal following plant maintenance.
Sabic, Omifco and I believe also OCI presidents all got on stage at GPCA and said low carbon ammonia market is crap, there's no demand

The dollar slid against major currencies such as the euro and yen on Monday following a rally last week after stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data and ahead of a key nonfarm payrolls report that could offer further clues on the Federal Reserve's policy path.
Data on housing, durable goods, and revisions to the second quarter gross domestic product came out higher than forecast. In addition, U.S. jobless claims fell sharply. The economic reports prompted a pullback in expectations for Fed interest rate cuts.
The greenback's retreat also came amid the risk of a government shutdown, with funding due to expire at midnight on Tuesday. President Donald Trump will convene a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House on Monday in a last-ditch attempt to end the standoff.
"We're broadly consolidating today, a little bit of a heavier tone. But a lot rests on whether the government closes down at midnight tomorrow," said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist, at Bannockburn Forex in New York.
"What was going to be the next impetus was going to be the jobs data this coming Friday, but if the government closes, then we won't get the jobs data right. So I think what that means is that it increases the uncertainty."
The U.S. Labor Department confirmed on Monday that its statistics agency would suspend economic data releases, including the closely-watched monthly employment report for September, in the event of a partial government shutdown
In afternoon trading, the dollar fell 0.6% to 148.61 , after posting last week its best weekly gain of more than 1% since early July.
The dollar index – a measure of its value relative to a basket of foreign currencies – was down 0.2% on to 97.9q, having risen 0.5% last week.
The euro, the largest component in the dollar index, rose 0.3% versus the U.S. unit to $1.1731 .
Traders are currently pricing in 42 basis points of Fed easing by December and a total of 105 basis points by the end of 2026, about 25 bps less than levels seen in mid-September
Top of investors' minds was a looming U.S. government shutdown should Congress fail to pass a funding bill before the fiscal year ends on Tuesday. Without passage of funding legislation, parts of the government would close on Wednesday, the first day of its 2026 fiscal year.
Analysts say the dollar typically weakens ahead of such episodes, before rebounding once the funding dispute is resolved. Markets are likely to see it as a fresh headwind for an already sluggish labour market.
"History would suggest that a short-lived government shutdown should have a relatively modest impact on the economy and on currency markets," said Karl Schamotta, chief market strategist, at Corpay in Toronto.
Ahead of Friday's jobs report, investors will also get figures on job openings, private payrolls and the ISM manufacturing PMI, among others.
In other currency pairs, the dollar slipped 0.1% to 0.7973 franc while sterling gained 0.3% to $1.3436.
Analysts expect inflation data from euro zone countries to have little impact on the rate outlook or the single currency, as investors expect policy to remain stable. Spain's European Union-harmonised 12-month inflation rate rose to 3.0% in September.
The market's attention, in addition, remained on the war in Ukraine and the potential for increased military spending.
In Japan, the diverging outlook for rates between the Fed and the Bank of Japan will remain in focus amid signs of a hawkish shift on the BOJ board.
In other currencies, the Aussie was last 0.5% higher at US$0.6580. The Reserve Bank of Australia announces its rate decision on Tuesday. Expectations are for the central bank to stand pat on rates.

Fertilizer Industry China Morning Reference 2025-30
❤ Urea: In the past two days, the domestic urea market has continued its weak and stalemated trend. Based on companies’ National Day order-taking situation, some prices have still shown slight loosening, while the mainstream remains temporarily stable.
❤ Synthetic Ammonia: The synthetic ammonia market is consolidating steadily. With the holiday approaching, there is little expectation of major adjustments. In regions with ample supply, there may be supplementary price cuts to facilitate sales, while overall the market is likely to stabilize with a focus on order fulfillment and shipments.
❤ Ammonium Sulfate: Yesterday, the ammonium sulfate market saw a small rebound. With an increase in international inquiries, granular factories showed signs of restocking. Against the backdrop of a rebound in coking-grade ammonium sulfate auction prices, caprolactam-grade ammonium sulfate also saw low-end price increases. In the short term, the ammonium sulfate market is expected to undergo narrow adjustments, with attention on subsequent Indian urea tender developments.
❤ Ammonium Chloride: Recently, the domestic ammonium chloride market has seen average trading sentiment. Before the holiday, downstream compound fertilizer companies have shown no strong intention to replenish stocks. Ammonium chloride companies have had poor order intake, inventories are rising, and during the holiday period most companies will focus on executing pending orders. After the holiday, demand is not expected to improve significantly, and ammonium chloride will continue operating at a low level.
❤ Melamine: Yesterday, the domestic melamine market mainly moved steadily upward. As the National Day holiday approaches, companies’ orders are basically full. At this stage, companies are mainly focused on orderly execution of orders, and the market is expected to remain stable before the holiday.
❤ Potash Fertilizer: As the National Day holiday nears, the domestic potash fertilizer market overall maintains a weak but temporarily stable situation. Market prices have shown little change, but with downstream demand remaining limited, new order transactions are somewhat slow. Potassium chloride prices remain stable, while potassium sulfate sales are sluggish, with most waiting for the market to pick up after the holiday.
❤ Phosphate Fertilizer: Approaching the long holiday, the domestic monoammonium phosphate market remains weak. In Central China, 55% powder ex-factory prices are at 3,280–3,350 yuan/ton, with some lower-end deals still present. Raw material sulfur prices continue to climb, but downstream demand remains sluggish, with limited follow-up on new orders. In the short term, the weak consolidation trend will continue. Yesterday, the domestic diammonium phosphate market maintained a stalemated trend. Raw material sulfur prices continue to rise, keeping cost pressures high. Companies are mainly focused on shipping pending orders. As goods gradually arrive in the market, trading activity is slowly increasing, and terminal demand is gradually being released. In the short term, the market will maintain a volatile consolidation.
❤ Compound Fertilizer: The continuous rise in sulfur prices has increased the difficulty of pricing sulfur-based fertilizers, with some companies implementing a “ship first, settle later” approach. In addition, in most of North China, autumn fertilizer sales are wrapping up, with some continuing to reduce inventory and move goods, and one-order-one-negotiation remains obvious. In the short term, the compound fertilizer market is expected to remain stable to weak, with localized wait-and-see sentiment.
𝗦𝘂𝗹𝗽𝗵𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱: There remains spot demand for October/November arrival. Brazil, India, Indonesia, Jordan, South Africa… When traders know the October lifting prices in the Middle East, more spot activity is expected.
𝗦𝘂𝗹𝗽𝗵𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆: It is a complex situation in each region but what surprised me recently was supply from Russia and Iran appears to be reduced. A switch in buying strategy of some suggests there is interruption of Russian supplies. Offers from Iran also slowed, leading us to suspect production slowing in Turkmenistan and a lengthy transportation window hindering sales out of Iran.
𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱: It has picked up slightly as some displace expensive sulphur with acid. In the past days Indonesia's Lygend, who has been absent from the acid import market for nearly two years as it focused on consuming its own sulphur-based acid, has bought around 90,000t of imported acid.
𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆: With raw material costs sulphur climbing, we anticipate some cuts in sulphur-based production in the near term, so this could reduce this source of acid. That said, the reason for the price decline in acid is an oversupply in the first place, so let’s see when the overhanging length can all be placed.
LONDON (ICIS)–In the Arab Gulf, have granular urea business reported close to 400 FOB and also at $382-384/tonne FOB. Seller confirmation not available.
Hi Phil
Hope all well.
I imagine you’re busy with this Madrid conference?. So a few things from my side:
India nfl tender was partly awarded for Nop to agrifields and RNZ. We think about 1000t – offer prices were$895-920 cfr. Belarus product freely available at 790-820 cfr.
China Nop 705-780 with ferts grade at low end and industrial at top. Domestic prices are up.
Eastern Europe/poland Nop stocks sizeable. No demand.
Turkish Nop on offer at $750 fob
Jordanian Nop on offer at $890 fob.
Tmap
Ocp confirmed to us massive expansion plan to 500kt year by 2030.
China still officially at 930 fob but you can get lower. India not an option and demand elsewhere weak.
Ws sop
EFIC 40kt yr plant will start now at year end.
Most Egyptian plants sold out well into 4q. Prices 630-640 fob. NCIC apparently sold 620 fob.
China – mostly not offering but out of free zones at 650-660 fob tianjin.
Tawaun still at 620-630 fob.
Indonesia 600-630 fob.
CN
No awards in India nfl.
China still at 170-175 fob.
MKP
India nfl tender partially awarded 700t. We hear around 1300 cfr.
Offers out of China at $1200-1210 fob. That’s weaker.
Brazil bought at 1370-1380 cfr.
Magsul
EFIC got REACH for its products so it can sell into Europe
China 170-175 fob.
Anything of note your side?
Thanks
Mike
Fertilizer Industry China Morning Report 2025-29
❤ Urea: Last week, the domestic urea market operated on the weaker side. Before the holiday, urea enterprises lowered quotations to stimulate order-taking. Low prices attracted some downstream restocking, but some enterprises still experienced slow progress in advance sales. Although news of exports and Indian tenders released potential positives, based on the current loose supply and demand situation, market support from favorable factors was insufficient. It is expected that in the short term, the urea market will still show steady but narrow fluctuations.
❤ Synthetic Ammonia: The supply and demand atmosphere in the synthetic ammonia market was mixed. In the north, supply recovery and increase were obvious, with high prices continuing to fall back, mainly narrowing regional price differences. In the south, the overall market stabilized, with some downstream actively stocking up, leading to short-term steady operation.
❤ Ammonium Sulfate: Last week, the domestic urea market operated on the weaker side. Before the holiday, urea enterprises lowered quotations to stimulate order-taking. Low prices attracted some downstream restocking, but some enterprises still experienced slow progress in advance sales. Although exports and… [text appears truncated in the original].
❤ Ammonium Chloride: Last week, the domestic ammonium chloride market operated weakly. Downstream compound fertilizer enterprises still focused on destocking and shipping, but operating rates declined. Before the holiday, buying interest in ammonium chloride remained low. Some ammonium chloride enterprises’ provisional or guaranteed-bottom policies will be implemented until the end of next month. With weak demand, the ammonium chloride market will continue to operate at a low level around the National Day holiday.
❤ Melamine: Last week, the domestic melamine market first declined and then rose. Approaching the holiday, enterprises cut prices to attract orders. As enterprise orders gradually filled, the willingness of operators to hold prices firm became obvious. Signs of market improvement appeared, and in the short term, the market is expected to focus on holding prices firm.
❤ Potash Fertilizer: The domestic potash fertilizer market trend was relatively stable. Potassium chloride traders’ quotations showed no obvious fluctuations. With relatively limited market demand recently, most purchases were on an as-needed basis. The mainstream price of imported 62% white potash was mostly at 3,150–3,450 yuan/ton. The potassium sulfate market trend was weaker, with new transactions not active.
❤ Phosphate Fertilizer: Yesterday, the domestic monoammonium phosphate market remained sluggish. Large manufacturers’ prices were temporarily stable, while small manufacturers and traders mainly negotiated actual transaction prices. Raw material sulfur prices continued to rise to the highest level of the year, but downstream overall demand remained sluggish, and the atmosphere for new transactions was weak. In the short term, the market will continue weak consolidation. Recently, the domestic diammonium phosphate market has been in a stalemate consolidation, with enterprises mainly arranging shipments of pending orders. Ex-factory prices showed no obvious changes. Downstream maintained on-demand procurement. As the fertilizer application period approached, the pace of market shipments improved somewhat. In the short term, the market will continue a consolidation trend.
❤ Compound Fertilizer: Last week, the compound fertilizer market operated weakly. By the end of the month, raw material fluctuations narrowed, and with autumn fertilizer restocking underway, enterprises mainly promoted shipments of compound fertilizer. Some offered preferential policies, with the focus of actual transactions moving downward. Reference: high-nitrogen compound fertilizer with 45% content ex-factory at 2,280–2,550 yuan/ton. Before the holiday, the compound fertilizer market maintained a consolidation trend.
