The dollar held gains against major currencies on Friday, after data showed an unexpected decline in new jobs created in the world's largest economy last month, suggesting that the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates sooner than expected. The U.S. economy lost 92,000 jobs last month after a downwardly revised 126,000 increase in January, data showed, while the unemployment rate increased to 4.4%. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast payrolls advancing by 59,000 jobs after increasing by a previously reported 130,000 in January.

"The large downside miss in non-farm payrolls will give the doves at the Fed something to talk about," said David Rees, head of global economics at Schroders in London.

"But at least part of the downside surprise was due to strike action in the healthcare sector that ought to reverse. Beyond that, while the employment report was soft, we doubt it will be long before continued robust growth in the U.S. economy will translate into more sustained demand for labor." In early morning trading, the dollar edged higher against the yen, up 0.2% at 157.85 yen , compared with 157.905 just before the data. The dollar index earlier trimmed its rise, but was up 0.3% at 99.307 . The euro was down 0.4% at $1.1558 . It earlier shaved some of its losses following the jobs report.

Post-payrolls, U.S. rate futures expect the Fed to resume rate cuts in September, instead of October, although the market still sees about 40 basis points of easing in 2026, less than two cuts of 25 bps each.

With conflict in the Middle East quickly tightening trade balances and presenting wider energy challenges, the Profercy World Nitrogen Index rose by 29.57 points to 250.27. This is the greatest weekly move since September 2022.

As is well documented, the Middle East accounts for over 35% of global urea trade, the majority of which is transported through the Strait of Hormuz, a route effectively blocked since 28 February. Most suppliers have stopped engaging in business, with production in Iran and Qatar already curtailed.

Business has been isolated to Oman, which does not rely on the Strait, with cargoes booked in recent days for movement from March into Q2. Regional spot values are now over $130pt above those prior to the conflict.

March commitments from the Middle East included regular contract shipments and spot cargoes to the USA, Australia and SE Asia, while at least 500,000t was planned for movement to India under the 18 February purchasing tender.

Producers elsewhere have, unsurprisingly, witnessed major demand for March and April cargoes. Those in Egypt placed at least 78,000t of granular urea with prices advancing $170pt in a matter of days. Meanwhile, Algerian sales were extended into April with one producer placing 125,000t.

With March already committed, Nigerian producers have been reluctant to place large volumes, although one 30,000t lot was sold at $655pt fob for April.

As is typically the case, cfr values in many markets lag replacement costs. In the West, the USA continues to offer the highest returns for many suppliers, with concerns around the April import line-up intensifying. March barge values in Nola briefly hit a high of $620ps ton fob, well above trading levels in the $460s ps ton before the war began.

The highest barge values this week reflect close to $680pt cfr metric equivalent, with March values today offering just $654pt cfr, below last done fob levels in both Nigeria and North Africa.

Document 2: Global Urea Market Intelligence (March 7, 2026)
The international urea market is experiencing a massive price surge due to military conflict in the Middle East, with export prices in some regions rising by over $200/ton—a 40% increase in one week.
Regional Market Highlights
Middle East Supply: The region exports 20 million tons of urea annually; current military conflicts pose an unprecedented threat to global supply. Most shipowners refuse to transit the area, and some insurance companies have canceled coverage.
Qatar: QatarEnergy has suspended urea production due to the natural gas crisis. On March 4, they declared Force Majeure on prior contracts.
Egypt: Israeli gas supplies to Egypt have been interrupted. Export prices for large granular urea reached $665/ton FOB by March 5.
Malaysia: Petronas sold 30,000 tons of large granular urea on March 5 at approximately $650/ton FOB.
Algeria: Prices rose steadily from late February, reaching $658/ton FOB by March 5. April resources are quoted as high as $680–700/ton.
Nigeria: Dangote sold 30,000 tons on March 5 at $655/ton FOB, up from $470/ton in mid-February.
Europe/USA: European natural gas prices soared to 54.29 Euros/megawatt-hour. Urea production costs in Europe have reached 580–600 Euros, with selling prices around 630 Euros. US Gulf prices reached $570–600/ton FOB by March 6.
Iran: Exports are expected to drop below 4 million tons in 2026, down from 5.75 million tons in 2024.
* Bangladesh: Suspended gas supply to five fertilizer plants has impacted 3 million tons of annual capacity.

Urea Daily Review
Date: Friday, March 6, 2026
Supply and Production
Daily Output: The urea industry produced approximately 220,500 tons on March 6.
Daily Change: This represents a decrease of about 1,700 tons compared to the previous working day.
Year-on-Year Change: Output is up by approximately 23,900 tons compared to the same period last year.
Plant Status: The Henan Zhongyuan Dahua facility is currently undergoing a short-term shutdown; however, production at other enterprises remains normal.
Market Trends and Pricing
Price Movement: Current urea market price quotes are generally trending toward "weak stability."
Negotiation Room: In mainstream regional markets, there is more room for price negotiation than before.
Demand Support: Support from the demand side is showing signs of weakening.
Demand Analysis
Agricultural Sector:
Top-dressing for the "green-up" stage in the Central Plains, Jiangsu, and Anhui has reached its end.
Small pockets of demand remain in Shandong and Hebei due to regional differences, but the fertilizer gap is small.
The urgency for agricultural stock has dropped significantly.
Industrial Sector:
Operating rates for compound fertilizer enterprises are gradually recovering, but procurement remains flat due to cost pressures and order statuses.
The panel/board industry is seeing a slow recovery in operations.
Traders lack the motivation to place follow-up orders, leading to quiet overall market activity.
Overall Outlook
Weakening Demand: Agricultural demand is expected to gradually decrease as the production cycle advances.
Supply Impact: The concentrated release of reserve stocks into the market has bolstered supply levels.
Price Pressure: Due to the combination of ample supply and fading demand, prices have begun to show an initial downward loosening trend.

Ammonium Sulfate Price Market on March 6
Ammonium sulfate prices continued their upward trend today. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East favor the high-level operation of international urea and ammonium sulfate; domestic factories have not reduced their sentiment to push prices up, and it is expected that the short-term market will mainly continue its high-level firm trend. However, as prices continue to be pushed up, market risk-aversion sentiment has increased because domestic ammonium sulfate market prices are currently at high levels, and the increase is mainly due to the influence of the international situation in the Middle East, which plays a large role in guiding sentiment. Procurement sentiment has become cautious, and the wait-and-see atmosphere remains unabated. Follow-up should focus more on terminal transaction conditions and the international political situation.

n already tight Western Canadian UREA market isnt going to be helped by the events in Iran, we saw $100CAD jump in urea on NOLA trading yesterday. $1200/mt retail coming if this drags on? Molten sulphur trade is equally or more reliant om middle east supply, so I expect the best case is this stops any chance of prices meaningfully retreating from record highs, worst case we go higher on raw material sulphur costs to levels that accelerate phos and sulphur fertilizers shutting down indefinitely.
