Hello again Francisco! Below is this week’s edition of the weekly phosphates update. MAP joins DAP and TSP in the firm trend, SSP temporarily stable. I will be off for the next three Fridays for a big holiday, so unfortunately there won’t be Friday updates for those weeks. If you do need to reach me I’m still around most of next week.
India: DAP is still at $636/t cfr, as a $660/t cfr spot sale of 45-50kt Australian DAP this week does not fall under the usual 5pc blanket import tariff.
OCP and India’s department of fertilizers should be reaching an agreement now/in the coming days for the supply of 1.6mn t DAP and 800,000t TSP for this year. There were rumours that the volumes were cut by a quarter but it doesn’t seem likely anymore. A lot of people are holding their breath to see at what level the share of the DAP to be sent over in this quarter will be priced, as it would likely fix the market price for the rest of the quarter. For the TSP I’m still hearing well below market prices
-Southeast Asia/China DAP: Southeast Asians are getting hungrier for DAP and keep enquiring from non-Chinese origin, as China remains closed, though they’re still banking on satisfying a large share of their demand through Chinese product once the country reopens. The China fob price was raise to $620-635/t on netbacks from Thailand.
We’re seeing offers of Chinese product for the May lots in the latest Ethiopian tender, and Chinese rock imports are stepping up, so the country could be getting ready to reopen in late April-May
European DAP: DAP prices keep firming, led by Germany/Benelux demand, and are now at $690-700/t fca. Availability is generally low, with OCP retreating from several markets, while Russian product is in low supply too
-Americas MAP and SSP: For the first time since September 2024, the Brazil MAP price moved, gaining $5/t at the high end. The market had remained largely dry of offer and demand, preventing much movement. But farmers are now slowly emerging with interest, meaning we could see several small increases going forward. This is also putting pressure on other Latin American countries, where prices are also likely to firm.
Brazilian importers secured a 100kt Saudi cargo this week on formula.
SSP demand remains strong in Brazil, but for now more deals are prevented by lower producer availability. So while this has kept the lid on prices this week, they could keep climbing going forward as long as Brazil remains hungry for SSP.
Meanwhile the US is stepping up MAP purchases for its spring applications amid warming weather, pushing up barge prices to $595-615/st fob. Phosphate prices could also find support from higher sulphur prices
Syrian rock: Talks are ongoing under the government's tender to sell 175,000t of phosphate rock on an ex-mine basis. The government likely got at least two bids before giving counter offers equivalent to around $120/t fob. This was not accepted by the highest bidder. The tender had offered 100kt of 29pc rock and 75kt of 30pc rock
March 3 (Reuters) – Argentina's farm sector brought in a total $2.18 billion through exports in February, a 45% increase compared to the same month a year earlier, the CIARA-CEC chamber of oilseed and grains crushers and exporters said on Monday.
The boost in export revenue was thanks to a presidential decree in late January that temporarily reduced grain export taxes, CIARA-CEC said.
Major agricultural associations had been expecting the decree due to low grains prices internationally and a drought.
Revenues from farm exports grew 5.2% in February from the month before, the chamber said.
The South American country is the world's top exporter of processed soy and a major producer of wheat and corn.
Exports are Argentina's top source of foreign currency, and the nation depends on them to boost its international reserves.
2 Iran tenders issued
Ethiopia urea scrapped
Aus Mkt
Brisbane going flat out
Summer crop mkt as you know
Sold out
Smaller warehouse
So need to manage stock turns & port calls
Newcastle will start to pick up this month 1/2 of all SOH contracted
Geelong sold out of Urea
Have resupply next month but there has been no break
Suppliers have contracted but Farmers don’t want collect until they see breaking rains
Sthn 1/2 of Vic have been in drought like conditions for 12mths
So competitors are approaching me wanting to be customers and utilise done floor space, it’ll be a shit show whereby a lot of pressure will be placed on suppliers to deliver product in a short space of time
There will be congestion & periods of no supply ex Geelong & potentially cargoes being cancelled
Stark contrast to last few years where record imports / sales with great rains across QLD, NSW & Vic after good harvests has seen farmers just continuing g to roll on with their businesses year after year
