Mitsubishi Chemical to close ammonia, methanol plant in Japan

LONDON (ICIS)–Mitsubishi Chemical Group has decided to end production at its Onahama Plant in Iwaki City, Fukushima prefecture, by the end of March 2027, the Japanese chemicals major said in an update on Tuesday.

The plant produces ammonia and ammonium hydroxide; methanol, formalin, wood-based adhesives, and AdBlue (a urea-based agent for diesel motor vehicle exhaust); fatty acid amides; ultra-high purity process chemicals; and triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) derivatives.

In addition, Mitsubishi has decided to close its Shinryo plant, also at Iwaki City, which produces fine chemical products and TAIC, it said.

The company tried in recent years to streamline operations at the two plants and attract new business, in response to “drastic changes in the market environment”, it said.

However, despite these efforts, “securing profitability at these plants has become extremely difficult”, it said in explaining the decision to close them down.

The manufacturing of products at the two plants will be discontinued in stages starting in March 2026 and fully terminated by the end of March 2027.

Affected employees will be reassigned to other Mitsubishi plants or will be provided “outplacement support”, the company said. It did not comment on financial impacts.
