Phosphate Rock Market Update:
While much of the fertilizer market grapples with rising costs and trade shifts, phosphate rock has quietly emerged as a stabilizing force.
Key takeaways from the latest April 2025 market report:
U.S. Tariffs Exclude Phosphate Rock: New tariffs (10–28%) on phosphate fertilizers don’t apply to phosphate rock, securing raw material flows for U.S. producers like Mosaic.
Price Stability: Rock prices remain steady ($80–85/t CFR China, $153/t CFR India), even as phosphoric acid and sulphur costs climb. This supports producer margins—especially in India.
Regional Highlights:
China: Stable import demand, active spot purchases.
India: Low DAP stockpiles and strong rock-based production economics.
Vietnam & Indonesia: Import reliance grows due to local production shortfalls.
Australia: Ardmore mine winding down, while Ammaroo gears up to fill future supply needs.
Egypt & Syria: Competitive offers from Abu Tartour; Syrian exports remain frozen.
Freight Rates Hold Steady: Global rock trade remains logistically viable, e.g., Red Sea to India at $24/t.
Broader Market Trends: Tight global DAP/MAP supply, Indian subsidy shortfalls, and U.S. trade policy are elevating fertilizer prices. Yet phosphate rock continues to anchor cost efficiency.
Outlook (Next 30–60 Days):
Expect continued firmness in phosphate markets. Amid rising input costs, phosphate rock remains a critical, cost-effective raw material—and one to watch.
LONDON (ICIS)–Nola barge values are up $17-20/short ton today on global cues, some concern about tariffs and supply being impacted for May and going forward as the US plants its second largest corn crop on record
LONDON (ICIS)–In India, IPL has issued counters for the ten lowest offers on the west coast and the eight lowest on the east coast in its 8 April tender for import of 1.5 million tonnes of urea. Acceptance is due by 11 April.

International trade: Over the last few days, US authorities have given further guidance regarding the tariffs status of Russian product going into the USA with several in the market now confident that no additional duties apply.
With no tariffs added, the US will be a premium market for Russian product and will likely attract the bulk of granular urea availability as long as the situation continues.
